NZ Scaup

Also known as the Black teal. Maori name: Papango.

The beautiful New Zealand Scaup which is found throughout New Zealand has very soft feathers and is noted for its rounded shape.
The male has yellow eyes and black down as shown in this painting, females have brown eyes and down. The New Zealand Scaup is New Zealands true diving duck. It is most impressive when seen in a clear lake "flying" through the water to a depth of two to three metres in search of water insects, or other food.
